Screen Test

Both Apple’s and Microsoft’s flagship tablet devices are large, powerful and elegant. But which is best for musicians?

Last year both Apple and Microsoft introduced new products representing each company’s vision for tablet computing. For Apple, it was the iPad Pro, an iPad aimed at those desiring a device more tailored towards productivity than content consumption, while Microsoft released a fourth-generation Surface Pro. Given the similarities between the two devices, and the fact that they both start around the same price, I thought it might be interesting to directly compare the two rather than discuss them individually. So in one corner is the entry-level iPad Pro with 32GB storage priced at £679$799, and in the other is the entry-level Surface Pro 4 with 128GB storage priced at £749$899. Let the battle commence!

Jun 26, 2018  Today we'll be comparing Logic Pro X vs GarageBand, to ultimately help you decide which is the best solution for you.The information below is based on real data from our community of users like you, giving you a truly unbiased comparison.

Size Matters

My first reaction when picking up the iPad Pro was basically ‘whoa’! The iPad Pro is, as others have noted, essentially a big iPad Air; but it’s only when you pick the thing up — looking at pictures just doesn’t give an appropriate impression — that you begin to realise what this actually means. The iPad Pro measures 8.68 by 12 inches with a thickness of 0.27 inches, and it weighs in at 713g, which makes it slightly heavier than the very first iPad, which weighed 680g. It can feel slightly weird to hold, particularly in portrait orientation, and it seems much more comfortable sitting on a desk.

The display measures 12.9 inches diagonally with a resolution of 2732 x 2048 at 264ppi (Pixels Per Inch) and looks every bit as good as you’d expect. Existing apps run just fine on the larger screen, but they have to be specially optimised to actually take advantage of all the available pixels. Apple’s own GarageBand, as noted in the review, is able to offer three additional Tracks in Track View and can now display a smaller Tracks View when you’re in Instrument View. Korg have updated Gadget so you can now see 10 Tracks and five Scenes in landscape mode, or seven Tracks and nine Scenes in portrait — standard iPads show seven Tracks and three Scenes in landscape and five Tracks and Scenes in portrait. WaveMachine Labs’ Auria also offers support, fitting (in landscape orientation) 18 tracks on the mixer and up to 29 on the editor, compared to 13.5 tracks on the mixer and up to 24 on the editor on non-Pro iPads.

The larger display makes multitasking apps more practical, and, indeed, the reason for the slightly odd screen size is so that you can run two apps side-by-side using Split View in landscape orientation, with both displaying the full portrait interface you would see on a regular iPad. Apps need to be tweaked in order to fully support multitasking, and Split View works great if you want to, say, work with Word and Excel open at the same time. However, most music and audio apps don’t support Split View, and I think the reason for this is simply that a large percentage of those apps are hardwired to use a landscape orientation, making it harder to see how Split View could be useful. (Unless Split View could be made to work the other way around, so you’d see two landscape interfaces with the iPad Pro in portrait orientation; but I can’t see Apple going for that.)

Pokemon black and white 2 rom download for android. Moving from sight to sound, the iPad Pro also features an interesting new speaker system. Where iPads have traditionally had one or two speakers next to the 30-pin or Lightning connectors, the iPad Pro has four speakers: two on the bottom as before, and now two on the top as well. Depending on the device’s orientation, Apple say that the iPad Pro will intelligently adjust the output so that, “While all four [speakers] produce bass frequencies, the top-most speakers are dedicated to higher frequencies.”

The design of the Surface Pro 4 was less surprising, as it’s more or less the same as its predecessor, although there a few differences to note. It’s ever so slightly thinner (0.33-inches vs 0.36), and ever so slightly lighter (766g vs 790g), which is just enough of a difference to give the sense of a more modern device. More importantly, Microsoft have made the screen larger (12.3-inches vs 12) without changing the Surface Pro’s footprint, so you now get a 2736 x 1824 resolution at 267ppi instead of the Surface Pro 3’s 2160 x 1440 display at 216ppi. This has been achieved by reducing the bezel around the display, and removing the touch-sensitive Windows button, which is great as this was something that got pressed more by accident than with intent.

Use android on mac. In other word: if they catch you writing an app for the iPhone by using anything that is written in Objective-C (and appcelerator is using Java-to-Objective-C conversion) they can revoke your app and your developer rights. But appcelerator is precisely the kind of developer app. Whereas native iOS developers must develop on a Mac, with Android, you have the choice of Windows, Mac, or Linux. To get started with Android on a Mac, download Android Studio for Mac. Android Studio is the official IDE for Android app development, and is based on IntelliJ IDEA.

Like the Surface 3, the entry-level Surface Pro 4 is fan-less and the volume buttons have been moved to next to the power button, which took some getting used to coming from previous Surface Pros. Since I generally use the device in landscape orientation, this change was a little annoying.

Seeing as the Surface Pro 4 runs full Windows 10 Pro, you can use it to run both modern, Universal Windows Platform apps and traditional Windows desktop software. This is just as well, since the Windows App Store still has quantity and quality problems when it comes to the selection of apps for musicians and audio engineers. There’s FL Studio Groove and StaffPad and, well, that’s about it. However, one advantage with Universal Windows apps is that they’re designed to scale to different types of devices with different screen sizes, so apps don’t need to be modified to take advantage of the larger screen.

When the Surface Pro 4 launched, there were number of issues with the device due to bugs in the firmware, which was a little disappointing. Apple are generally good at shipping devices that don’t need a period of updating when you first turn on the device, and it’s a shame Microsoft are still struggling in this regard. However, at the time of writing (in mid March) most of these glitches seemed to be resolved and my Surface Pro 4 was working well.

Under The Bonnet

Internally, the iPad Pro and Surface Pro 4 both feature 4GB memory and a dual-core processor: the iPad powered by Apple’s latest A9X system-on-a-chip, and the Surface Pro 4 featuring an Intel m3. In terms of pure performance, turning to Geekbench, the iPad Pro handily beats the Surface Pro 4 with a score of 5459 vs 4897. However, if you want a faster Surface, you can of course spend more money and purchase one with an Intel i5 or i7 chip. According to Geekbench’s web site, i5 and i7-based Surface Pro 4s have been scoring around 6000 and 7000 respectively, and these models also include up to 16GB RAM as well — plus a fan.

In terms of storage, the iPad Pro starts with just 32GB, which seems a little exiguous for such a product. If you need more than 32GB, Apple offer 128GB models with or without cellular connectivity for £899$1079 and £799$949 respectively.

The Surface Pro 4 starts with 128GB, and while some will point out that Windows requires more storage space than iOS, you’re still left with 102GB out of the box (iOS, by comparison, consumes about 5GB). But unlike the iPad Pro, the Surface Pro 4 offers a microSD slot behind the kickstand, enabling you to conveniently expand the storage capacity of the device. And, if you’re willing to pay more, models with either 256GB or 512GB are also available (which also include more memory and faster processors).

iOS can now make use of external storage devices, although this is obviously less elegant as it’s something else to carry around with you, and apps have to be modified to take advantage of this. Currently, apps such as WaveMachine Labs’ Auria Pro and Steinberg’s Cubasis offer support for external storage.

This chart illustrates the performance of various tablets I have known and loved over the years.

Is The Pen Mightier Than The Pencil?

A key aspect of the iPad Pro’s design is support for the new Apple Pencil, a stylus that features a male Lightning connector hidden under a magnetic cap at the base of the accessory. The Pencil is pure Apple: it’s white and looks beautifully futuristic, but, more importantly, feels pleasant in the hand. Apple may call it a Pencil, though it’s weighted in such a way that it feels like a really nice pen, and it works remarkably well with fairly decent palm rejection. The biggest rub with the Pencil is that it’s not included in the box and costs £79$99 extra.

The Pencil communicates with the iPad Pro via Bluetooth, and you pair the Pencil by simply inserting it into the iPad Pro. Should you turn Bluetooth off at any point, you’ll need to pair the Pencil again when Bluetooth is re-enabled. In addition to using the Lightning connector to pair the Pencil, it’s also used to charge the stylus. You’ll probably find yourself charging the stylus at least once a week, and Apple supply an adaptor so you can plug the Pencil into a regular Lightning cable. If you find yourself without a charger, you can also charge the Pencil by plugging it into your iPad, getting an extra 30 minutes of use time in just 15 seconds.

In terms of software support, many creative apps can now take advantage of the pencil, and Microsoft have added Windows-like inking features to the Office apps on iOS. When it comes to music apps, the support is fairly minimal at the time of writing, although Notion have a £5.99$7.99 Handwriting in-app purchase that supports the Pencil. Unlike StaffPad on Windows, where you just write directly onto the score, the Handwriting module opens a magnified area of the score below the actual score, and this is where you write. It feels a little clunky, to be honest, and the recognition is not always reliable, although it is compatible with any input device, be it the Pencil, your finger, or any other iPad stylus.

Microsoft, of course, have a head start when it comes to modern styli, dating all the way back to the introduction of the Tablet PC in 2001. As with all previous ‘Pro’ Surfaces, Microsoft include a Surface Pen in the box (additional Pens can be purchased for £49.99$59.99, and the Pro 4’s Pen improves upon the one supplied with the Pro 3. It’s slightly longer, for one thing, with a tip that has a little more resistance than before, and Microsoft also offer a pack of different tips for £10$10.

Although I loved the look and feel of the Pencil, the Pen offers a good deal more functionality, and the best thing about the new Pen is that Microsoft have brought back the eraser that featured on earlier, Wacom-powered Surface Pro models. So if you want to erase something, you simply touch the screen with the opposite end of the Pen — Apple, take note! Also, Microsoft claim you’ll get about 18 months of battery life with the Pen’s replaceable battery.

If you want a tablet primarily for notation work, the Surface Pro 4 wins hands down. That it is able to run both Universal Apps such as StaffPad and desktop apps like Sibelius — both of which take advantage of the pen — is a combination that’s hard to beat. Notion for iOS is a commendable app (look out for a full review in a coming issue), but it’s hard to beat the fluid workflow of StaffPad or the sophistication of Sibelius, or even the desktop version of Notion.

Keyed In

One hardware accessory that you may or may not need depending on how you’re going to be using a tablet is a keyboard cover. In addition to the Pencil, Apple are also offering the Smart Keyboard, an accessory that’s a cover, a keyboard and stand, and is available for £139$169. This communicates with the iPad Pro and provides power via a new so-called Smart Connector on the left-hand side of the iPad Pro, and is covered with what Apple describe as a “custom-woven fabric” with a “water- and stain-resistant finish”. The keys themselves are based on the switching design used in new MacBooks, so the travel on the keys is pretty minimal and it’s likely you won’t enjoy the experience of typing on it. That being said, however, it’s still possible to type at a reasonable speed given that Apple have employed the same island-style layout used on their other keyboards. The stand aspect suffers from the same problem as the original Surface tablets in that it’s not adjustable; Microsoft later solved this problem by making the built-in kickstand used on Surface Pros (since the third generation) fully adjustable.

With its larger display, the iPad Pro makes Split View multitasking more comfortable — if your apps support it, that is.

This typing experience probably won’t be a big deal if you’re using the iPad Pro primarily to run audio apps, and some developers have been taking advantage of the keyboard for more than just text entry. For example, in addition to fully taking advantage of the iPad Pro, Algoriddim’s djay Pro makes use of the Smart Keyboard to perform a number of shortcuts for looping and cue points, as well as library navigation, search and more.

Microsoft have been offering keyboard covers since introducing the Surface product line four years ago, and are often criticised for not including one in the box given that a significant amount of the Surface Pro’s functionality can depend on it. The Surface Pro 4’s Type cover (which is backwardly compatible with the Surface Pro 3) is a huge improvement on previous efforts. Microsoft have somehow made the cover thinner while managing to improve the feel of the keys, moving to an island-style layout that has made the typing experience dramatically better. It feels almost as good as a really good laptop keyboard, and far better than the majority of others — including Apple’s Smart Keyboard. The trackpad has also been enhanced, and although it’s not quite perfect, its larger design with a smooth glass finish is surprisingly usable. At £109.99$129.99 it’s admittedly not a cheap accessory (though less expensive than the Smart Keyboard), but if you’re purchasing a Surface Pro 4, buy a Type Cover to accompany it.

Pro Vs Pro

As is always the case when considering computing devices, it all comes down to software, and, in a way, both devices have a problem in this department. The iPad Pro can of course run all the apps in the App Store, which will certainly benefit from the faster processor and extra memory; but the interface and experience will be the same as on any other iPad until developers tweak their apps to support and utilise the larger display. Also, many of these apps, while very good in a mobile context, aren’t very ‘pro’ on a device with such a price tag. For example, Cubasis is great, but it’s no Cubase and obviously isn’t intended to be. Once you add all the accessories, you very quickly find yourself in MacBook Air territory in terms of price, on which you can run far more capable applications.

The Surface Pro 4 has something of the opposite problem, in that while (with a couple of exceptions) the Windows Store lacks compelling Universal Windows Apps, you have the benefit of being able to run existing applications like Cubase, Live, Reaper, Reason and so on. Of course, whether the tablet form factor of the Surface Pro makes sense if you’re primarily going to be running desktop apps is another question. Because if you’re going to be running desktop apps, you’ll probably want to opt for a faster model with more memory, and, as with the iPad Pro, you quickly get into the price range of a decent laptop.

In conclusion, if you spend a good deal of time working with iOS music and audio apps and you’re happy to spend the money, the iPad Pro is quite literally the biggest and most powerful iPad to run these apps. If you want a tablet that can run full desktop versions of existing applications, and specifically if your interest is more in the notation space, the Surface Pro 4 is the obvious choice.

VST plug-ins are probably one of the greatest things about using a digital audio workstation, in addition to the fact you can go back to your work at any time and fix whatever you have to make your song sound good.

GarageBand, like many other DAWS, comes with the ability to install plug-ins and they’re fun to use.

In this tutorial, I’m going to lay out a step-by-step process for installing plug-ins into GarageBand. At first, I struggled to make this work, but it became like second nature after a few tries. it’s really quite simple.

Where Do I Find Plug-Ins?

First things first: If you want to get your hands on some solid VST’s, check out VSTforFree.com. It’s a great place for all kinds of plug-ins. Many of them aren’t compatible with Mac, however, there are still some great ones on there.

In this article, I’ll show you some of the more popular plug-ins to use in Garageband so more on that later.

One of the great thing about VST’s is that you can find them all over online. Many YouTubers show you what plug-ins they use, and where to find them, so finding a great plug-in is as simple as just going on YouTube or Google to find them.

Without further ado, this is how to download VST’s for Mac in GarageBand.

How To Install Plug-ins In Garageband

For this tutorial, I’m going to be using the DSK Dynamic Guitars Plugin which you find here at VST4Free.

On this page, you can see the different options for downloading the plugin. We want to use the Mac AU version.

1) Click on the Mac AU file and download the Zip File. I prefer to put it all on the desktop, that way it’s easy to find later when I want to drop it into the library.

It shouldn’t take longer than a couple of minutes for it to download.

2) After it’s finished downloading, you can open up the Zip File, and it’s going to show you the components for the plug-in. It looks like a little white lego block.

3) Now, go to your computer’s home-screen, then into the settings on the top left-hand side and click on where it says “Go.”

4) During this part, you have to hold the “Options” button on your keyboard so that it brings up “Library” in the drop-down menu. You have to hold the “Options” button, otherwise, it’ll disappear.

5) Go into your “Library,” and find the folder that says “Audio.”

6) Typically, it’ll bring up four different folders, “MIDI Drivers,” “Plug-Ins,” “Presets,” and “Sounds.”

7) Open up “Plug-ins.”

8) Open the file, “Components.”

9) If you’ve followed the instructions I’ve laid out, you’ll have the Dynamic Guitars Component sitting on your home screen, that way you can simply drag and drop the component into the “Components” file.

10) In most cases, getting access to this plug-in simply requires you to open up GarageBand and you’ll find your new plug-in in your Smart Control’s plug-in settings.

However, some people struggle with this part, because, for whatever reason, they have to turn their computer on and off in order for the plug-in to show up.

11) So turn your computer on and off just to be safe.

12) Now open up GarageBand.

After the appearance on several Mac platforms, MS Word finally became part of the celebrated suite of document, presentation and email editing applications. Microsoft word 2011 for mac free download.

13) Go into your Smart Controls and find the plug-ins in your options.

14) Open up the Available plug-ins.

15) It should say, “Dynamic Guitars,” and you just click on the “Stereo” option that it brings up afterward, and now you’ve successfully uploaded your new plug-in and it’s ready to use.

16) In some instances, you might have to adjust the octave, otherwise, the plug-in won’t work correctly depending on the VST.

Step one is to open up a song. Step two is to tap the FX button, which — on the iPad — you’ll find in the top left corner of the song view. How to fade out a song on garageband ipad. And in addition to the gimmicky effects, the FX track also has controls for reverb, echo (delay), treble, bass, plus GarageBand’s excellent Visual EQ. It’s like a master mix that iOS applied after every thing else. I has all kinds of fun gimmicks — stutter FX, faux record-scratching, and a filter to make it sound like your song just went to a nightclub bathroom.FX lives in a separate track which sits at the bottom of your project, and affects every track above.

However, with this particular plug-in, you won’t have that problem because it’s a guitar, and the designer of the VST made it so that you can play the guitar at many different octaves.

With my DrumPro plug-in that I always use, that isn’t the case, and it has to be at Octave 3, or “C3,” as GarageBand refers to it.

Why aren’t my Plug-ins showing up in GarageBand?

Like, I mentioned above, most people can’t find their plug-in in GarageBand because they haven’t turned their computer on and off. I’ve noticed that other tutorials forget to mention this.

How To Install Lepou Plugins in GarageBand?

If you want to get your hands on LePou Amplifier Plug-ins, just click on this link here.

On the right-hand side of the page, you can scroll down and see where it says, “Amp Sim Pack,” and underneath that, “Mac AU (Universal Binary).”

You want to click on that, and then download the 5 different components listed in Google Drive. There’s a download button on the right-hand side of this page where you can download all of it.

After that, just follow the steps that I laid out above. Just as a quick refresher, you’ll have to unpack the downloaded ZIP file and then open up the file and drag and drop the individual “component” files into your library.

When I was having trouble, I turned my computer on and off, and then I had to reboot GarageBand in order for the LePou plug-ins to show up in the “Audio Units” file.

These are quite possibly some of the best Amplifier plug-ins that you can use in Garageband in my opinion. The Clean setting in the LePou plug-in is pretty great.

What Are The Best Plug-Ins for GarageBand?

Like I mentioned at the beginning of the article, there are a ton of free plug-ins on the internet that are a lot of fun to use. I’ve scoured the internet looking for the best VSTs, and I came up with this list.

As a side note, even though they’re paid plug-ins, I included Superior Drummer and Amplitube 4 because they have such a good reputation.

Superior Drummer, especially, is a great program for people interested in making rock and metal songs. However, I’m sure that hip-hop producers can put it to good use as well.

Additionally, for this list, I polled users online and asked them what some of their favorite VSTs are to use, so I can’t vouch for all of them personally.

Without going too far off topic, here’s the list (I provided links to where you can find each one):

This is a synth plug-in made by U-he and based off of the Roland Juno-60 which came out in 1982. It’s a classic. This plug-in has quite a bit more functionality, however, and it’s powered by Amazona.de. U-he has a reputation for imitating analog models well.

This is a collection of 28 plug-ins that are extremely popular with not only GarageBand users but for other DAW users as well. You can pay for the license for added functionality and other features, but from what I understand, most people just take the free version and are happy with that.

This package includes reverb, mixing and mastering tools, modulators, filters, compressors, flangers, phasers, tremolos, tuners, vibratos, limiters, loudness analyzers, notepads, oscillators, and shapers.

This plug-in is known for its “classic” stereo reverb which is very simple to use but sounds great. It also has a bunch of different presets that you can use.

But if the SPOD continues when you switch to another app, then another app is causing the problem. If the spinning pinwheel or beachball cursor goes away but returns when you bring the Safari app back to the front, then it's likely Safari that is having an issue. You can usually tell if a specific app, such as Safari, is causing the slowdown by bringing another app to the foreground. It's possible the SPOD isn't being caused by the suspected app, but by another app or daemon that may be running in the background. https://evermn831.weebly.com/blog/imac-dmg-stays-in-verifying.

LePou guitar amplifier simulators are pretty awesome. However, I actually like the clean version of the amps they give you, rather than the distorted channel.

It comes with five amplifiers: the Hybrit, Le456, LeCto, LeGion, and LeXtac. Each one is great for its own reason. I would say that my favorite, thus far, is the LeGion and the LeXtac.

  • Crystal Synth

This is an old-school synthesizer plug-in that has been around for a long time and comes with all kinds of effects. The effects, honestly, sound pretty authentic for a free VST. Some users claim there are better plug-ins and there probably are, but this is great for what it is.

Made by TAL, the purpose of this plug-in is for voice processing, but it can be used for a number of different functions. From what I understand, it’s not compatible for Mac’s that are 10.10 and higher, unfortunately. But I’m sure there is a way to make it work.

The Blue Cat audio plugin comes with a range of different modulation effects, including a 3-band equalizer, a gain-suite, a chorus, phaser, flanger, and a frequency analyzer.

This is an EQ plug-in that is now compatible with almost every DAW, depending on whether you get the professional version or not. It’s styled after the Pultec EQ.

  • Amplitube 4(Costs Money)

Amplitube 4 is a great plug-in for many users because they have an official Mesa Boogie Amplifier pack, including the dual rectifier, the triple rectifier, the Mark-III, and the transatlantic TA-30.

It has more features than that, including a cabinet section where you can choose microphone placement and a bunch of other settings. Moreover, Amplitube has worked with a bunch of other companies, including Orange Amplifiers.

You can actually get a free demo version of Amplitube though with the purchase of an iRig HD 2, which you should get anyways (if you’re a guitar/bass player).

You can read more about the iRig HD 2 and some of my other favorite products here.

  • Superior Dummer 2.0(Also Costs Money)

Created by ToonTrack, Superior Drummer has a great reputation for being one of the greatest drumming software. It has over 50 GB of drum kits and samples that you can choose from, and like Amplitube, companies worked with them directly in the creation of the samples.

Djay Pro Vs Garageband

Teamviewer 10. Also created by u-he in 2005, this is a fairly old plug-in, but is considered as a classic synthesizer that comes with a ton of different presets. It comes with a filter, an oscillator, an envelope, an arpeggiator, and a sequencer.

Download windows os for mac free. If you have a third-party DVD burning program installed on your computer that you prefer to use for creating the installation DVD, that program might open by going to the location where the file is saved and double-clicking the ISO file, or right-click the ISO file, select Open with and choose your preferred DVD burning software. If you want to use the Windows Disk Image Burner to create an installation DVD, go to the location where the ISO file is saved. On the General tab, click Change and select Windows Explorer for the program you would like to use to open ISO files and select Apply. Right-click the ISO file and select Properties.

This is another legit synthesizer plug-in created by Archetype Instruments. It’s fairly simple to use, but can be used for a wide range of effects, including filters and distortion.

Another polyphonic synthesizer plug-in compatible for both PC and Mac. Modeled after an old Roland synth, the settings are adjustable with sliders rather than knobs, which some people prefer.

The SGA1566 is a virtual pre-amp that is used for boosting particular instruments and channels.

EZ Drummer, like Superior Drummer, is also created by Toon Track, but it’s simpler, less expensive (about half as much), and doesn’t come with as many drum-kits and settings.

The Nova-67P is another equalizer plug-in paired with a compressor. With this, you can input a side-chain signal.

This is akin to the Digitech Whammy Pedal, which you can see in the image for this blog post. Nonetheless, you can use this to make pretty bizarre sounds.

Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine is known for using the stomp-box from which this VST takes its inspiration. Essentially, the Pitchproof plug-in is a pitch-shifter and harmonizer.

I actually own the Digitech Whammy Pedal, and obviously, the real analog model is far superior to any form of a plug-in that you can use. It’s a great little piece of equipment for guitar playing. You can probably check it out on Amazon and get it for a good price.

Multiply is a nice little chorus effect that I like to use for guitars, piano, and vocals, primarily. Garageband comes with a chorus effect, but it isn’t quite as good as this one.

The Voxengo Marvel GEQ is a 15-band equalizer that allows you to really take control of the EQ of your track. I actually own an MXR 10-Band EQ, and it’s very similar to this plug-in, albeit, superior.

Free adobe flash player with paappi for mac. You can also grab one of those off of Amazon if you’re interested in a legit piece of equipment.

This is, basically, a super powerful and useful compressor that allows you to do more than the compressor that comes with Garageband. It’s pretty cool and worth checking out.

This, like the M-Audio FX Bundle, comes with over 20 effects and processors, 24 to be exact. It’s a fairly old set of plug-ins, but I’m sure it can be quite useful.

I use this one quite a lot whenever I can’t get ahold of my real acoustic and nylon string guitar. It’s superior to the guitars offered in GarageBand, but still, not quite as good as the real thing, of course. For what it is, it works great.

I use this plug-in almost every day, especially the Trap Kit setting it comes with. It comes with over a dozen drum-kits, which makes it pretty handy for hip-hop producers.

What Plug-Ins come with GarageBand?

When you download stock plug-ins in Garageband, it comes with a plethora of useful VST’s, including all of the software instruments.

Software Instruments

Garageband comes with 15 different categories of software instruments: bass, drum kit, electronic drum kit, guitar, mallet, orchestral, percussion, piano, synthesizer, vintage B3 organ, vintage clav, vintage electric piano, vintage mellotron, world, arpeggiator.

Each category has a number of different software instruments within it, especially the arpeggiator, which must have close to 50-70 models.

Plug-ins

In the plug-in settings, there are 12 categories of plug-ins with a ton of different sub-categories:

Amps and Pedals, Delay, Distortion, Dynamics, EQ, Filter, Imaging, Modulation, Pitch, Reverb, Specialized, and Utility are the main categories.

Amps and Pedals – Amp Designer, Bass Amp Designer, Pedalboard.

  • The Amp Designer has 26 different Models, 26 Amps, and 26 Cabinets. Garageband’s Amp Designer is actually pretty solid considering Garageband is a free program.
  • The Bass Amp Designer has 4 different models, 3 amps, and 8 cabinets.

Pedalboard –The pedalboard comes with 36 different effects. It pretty much has everything you could need for playing guitar, including overdrive, wah, a whammy pedal, delay, chorus, overdrive, and so on and so forth.

Their quality isn’t quite as good as some of the plug-ins that you can download or buy, but they’re sufficient, nonetheless.

Delay – Delay Designer, Echo, Sample Delay, Stereo Delay, and Tape Delay

Distortion – Bitcrusher, Clip Distortion, Distortion, Distortion II, Overdrive, and Phase Distortion.

Dynamics – Compressor, DeEsser, Enveloper, Limiter, Multipressor, and the Noise Gate.

EQ– Channel EQ and Single Band EQ.

Filter – AutoFilter, Filterbank, Fuzz-Wah, and the Spectral Gate.

Imaging – Direction Mixer, and the Stereo Spread.

Modulation – Chorus, Ensemble, Flanger, Microphaser, Modulation Delay, Phaser, Ringshifter, Rotor Cabinet, Scanner Vibrato, Spreader, Tremolo.

Where are the Plug-ins in GarageBand?

When you first open the program, Garageband shows you all of the 15 software instruments on the left-hand side, and as I mentioned above, there are a ton of instruments and pre-sets within each category.

The other plug-ins are located in the bottom within the Smart Controls area, including within the plug-ins option as well as within the Amp Designer, Bass Amp Designer, and the Pedalboard.

Whenever you download plug-ins through the way I showed earlier in the article, the plug-ins will often appear in the Audio Units tab.

The plug-ins are in several locations, but it also depends on how you define plug-ins. If we’re talking about the plug-ins that you’ve downloaded, then you’ll find these in the “Audio Units” tab within the Smart Controls plug-in settings.
